Join the Big Butterfly Count 2025

This summer, residents across the UK are invited to take part in the Big Butterfly Count, running from 18 July to 10 August 2025.
Why It Matters
Butterflies may be small, but they’re powerful indicators of environmental health. Changes in their numbers can reveal the effects of pollution, habitat loss, and climate change. Unfortunately, many UK species are in decline – with last year seeing the second-lowest butterfly counts since records began in 1976.
That’s where you come in. The Big Butterfly Count is a national citizen science project run by Butterfly Conservation, designed to help monitor the health of our environment – and anyone can take part.
How to Get Involved
Taking part is easy and only takes 15 minutes:
Pick a sunny spot – your garden, a local park, or anywhere outdoors.
Count butterflies and day-flying moths – record the highest number of each species you see at once.
Submit your sightings via the free Big Butterfly Count app or online at bigbutterflycount.butterfly-conservation.org.
You’ll also find handy ID guides and resources on their website to help identify what you’ve seen.
Let’s help nature thrive – one butterfly at a time. 🦋
